Caring for Your Windows and Doors

Windows and Doors will continue to perform well if given some simple, routine cleaning and maintenance. Here are a few maintenance highlights and guidelines from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association that will help keep your windows and doors working their best and looking great.

Taking care to keep the tracks free of debris and all openings clear. You should also avoid washing windows in direct sunlight, use a mixture of mild dish soap and water, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft, absorbent cloth in order to aviod spotting. Washing your screens is equally as important, and can be fairly simple depending on the style of window. Remove the screens and wash with a soft brush on a flat surface with the same solution you used to wash the glass. Then, rinse, wipe to dry, and reinstall.

When cleaning your windows, you should avoid using petrolium based solvents on the glass because they could damage the insulating glass seal or other component parts of the window. Steer clear of using any high-pressure sprays to clean windows as well, because this could also damage the glass seal. Additionally, you shouldn’t use sharp instruments or abraisive pads to clean windows and should refrain from attaching anything to the glass, like masking tape.
