What Qualifies as an Impact Resistant Door?
To qualify as impact resistant, doors must pass rigorous testing requirements. The doors must be designed to withstand debris hitting the door with up to 200 mph winds, a Category 5 hurricane. Every part of an impact resistant door, from the basic structure to the metals used in the door’s frames, and even the hinges, are reinforced under strict government guidelines.

Why is an Impact Resistant Door Unlike a Regular Door?
Ordinary doors just don’t have the strength to stand up to strong winds or high velocity flying debris. Typically, these doors are specifically constructed with a metal outside layer covering insulated filler inside, basically a hollow door with insulation stuffed in between the metal facia. Cosmetically, they certainly can enhance the look of your home. But during a hurricane, they don’t have the strength, durability or safety that impact resistant doors have.
Impact resistant doors are built from the core out. Solid steel and heavy urethane plates are surrounded with an extra thick layer of wood, composite wood, or reinforced fiberglass. Advanced technology glass is laminated and thicker than normal glass, providing the ultimate in-home protection, while still letting in natural light. The frames and hardware are also made with reinforced materials. Sturdy, fortified hinges anchored to your home’s underlying structure complete the doors’ installation process.
